Castle Hill

The history of Edinburgh Castle goes back to the 6th century when it was used as a military base and it was not until much later that the castle was used by civilians. It is built on a hill in the centre of Edinburgh and is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the city. It has always been the city’s icon, perhaps because it is in such a prominent position for all to see and it boasts beautiful views of the city.

There are guided tours of the castle which last about 2 hours. During the tour you will see the Honours of Scotland and The Stone of Destiny on which future kings of the country were crowned and if you visit the castle at 1 o’clock you will experience the roar of The One O’clock Gun, a canon lit every day expect on Sundays.

There are various spectacular performances and festivals which are held at Edinburgh Castle each year. The Edinburgh Military Tattoo is a parade of pipes and drums of the Scottish regiments which is held every summer and attracts thousands of visitors and tourists as it has been a tradition for more than 50 years.
