Keukenhof and National Windmill Day

There are two events you must not miss if you visit Amsterdam in the spring. Firstly, there is an annual tulip exhibition between March and May in Keukenhof which is a 74 acre garden also referred to as the Garden of Europe. It is the largest garden in the world and is used by people from all over the Netherlands and Europe to grow tulips. The show is held near Lisse, a town south of Amsterdam. In 2014, Keukenhof will be open from March 20 until May 18.

The annual Holland Festival is renowned as the biggest performance arts festival in the Netherlands which takes place during the entire month of June. It started in 1947 with the aim of promoting opera, theatre, music and dance. Modern and classical shows are usually programmed for the festival and there are also many performances put on by international groups and perhaps young or undiscovered artists, thus giving them an opportunity to be discovered.

Father Christmas announces the start of the festive season in Amsterdam around the middle of November. Some of the typical events which take place are traditional carol services which are held in the old church and there is also a Christmas market.

Santa Claus brings gifts to the Dutch children on the 5th December and the Queen marks the end of the year by giving her speech on the 31st December. The Dutch celebrate the New Year with fireworks and street parties in Amsterdam.
