Birka Björkö, Mälaren Stockholm Located on Björkö Island at the edge of Lake Mälaren is Birka, the first city which was founded in Sweden in 7th century AD. It became one of the most important trading centres for Scandanavia and Eastern Europe because of its port. Birka was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1993 and the Birka museum was opened in 1996 which shows archaeological finds from the Viking era.
