There are two international airports in Tenerife; the first is located in the north of the island Tenerife Norte, and the second is found in the south, Tenerife Sur.

Tenerife Norte is situated in the former capital of Tenerife, San Cristobal de la Laguna which is about seven miles from Santa Cruz de Tenerife. This airport connects Tenerife with the other seven Canary Islands, mainland Spain, Europe and South America. The airport is connected to Santa Cruz and Puerto de Cruz by the TF-5 motorway and this is the best route to take if travelling by car. There are also buses which cover the route between the airport and the city and they are operated by TITSA. The only method of public transport which runs after midnight is the taxi service.

Tenerife Sur is about 37 miles from the capital of Tenerife, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and it is located in the town of Granadilla de Abona. This airport is only 12 miles east of the popular holiday resort, Playa de las Americas, and it is connected with Santa Cruz by the TF1 motorway. There are also buses operated by TITSA which cover the route if you do not have access to a car. Alternatively, you can take a taxi from the stands outside the airport terminal.

Tenerife is also connected to mainland Spain (Cadiz) and four of the other Canary Islands via the ferry service Trasmediterranea.

Public Transport

TITSA (Transportes Interurbanos de Tenerife SA) is the bus company which networks the island, interconnecting the main cities as well as offering public transport within Santa Cruz and other big cities on the island.

Hiring a car is another popular method of travelling around the island as this is the most practical way to discover the rural areas of Tenerife and taxis are expensive.
