Bellver Castle is located on top of a hill about two miles from Palma, and its setting provides a beautiful backdrop to the castle and fantastic views of Palma Bay. It was commissioned by King James II of Majorca and built by Pere SalvĂ  between 1309 and 1311 as a palace and royal Fortress. Between the 18th and 19th century, the castle was used as a prison.

It is renowned as the only circular castle in Europe and it has three built-in towers and one free standing tower which is about 33m high. Today, the castle is used as a museum and displays a collection of archaeological finding which show and explain the history behind the city. There is also a collection of statues of Cardenal Despuig and objects from other cities in Majorca.

The castle is one of the most popular tourist attractions on the island and is open between October and March from 8 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. and from 8 a.m. to 7.30 p.m. from April to September. Entrance to the castle is free on Sundays; however, the museums and rooms of the castle are closed.
