San Isidro is the patron saint of Madrid and every year around 15 May, the most popular bullfighting festival takes place in Madrid. The best matadors take to the ring at Las Ventas Bullring (Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas). If you wish to see a bullfight during the festival, you should buy the tickets in advance.

The bullfighting festival is not the only attraction during the San Isidro Festival – there are also festivals during the night, fireworks and traditional events such as religious processions. The mayor gives an opening speech to start the festival and the end of the event is marked by cooking a traditional dish known as cocido madrileƱo in the open air. Many Madrid citizens (or madrileƱos) dress up in traditional costumes during these fiestas, and take part in traditional dancing and open-air concerts which you can see in Plaza Mayor and throughout the whole city.
