The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia is considered to be the best contemporary art museum in Spain. The museum focuses particularly on the avant-grades of Spanish art and displays masterpieces by Dalí, Juan Gris, Picasso, Miró, Saura and Tàpies in its permanent collection. Its most prided painting is the Gernica by Pablo Picasso which attracts lots of visitors to the museum each year. The latest artistic pieces are displayed in Espacio UNO, an area dedicated to the works of new designers.

The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions which vary during the year. It is located in the premises of the former Hospital General de Madrid which was constructed in the 18th century, designed by the famous architect Francisco Sabatini and adapted to host the museum in 1992.
