The Palacio de la Zarzuela is located in Monte de El Pardo and it is the official residence of the Spanish monarchy. The palace was built in the 17th century and is about 9 miles from Madrid city centre. It was originally designed as a country palace and hunting zone to accompany the Palacio de El Pardo which is located in the same area. However, it had to be rebuilt due to damage caused by the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). It was named La Zarzuela as the first "La Zarzuela" plays were performed in the this palace.
