June marks the start of the traditional summer festivals in Lisbon, which were originally referred to as the “Festas dos Santos populares”, or Popular Saints Festivals, but is now commonly known as Festas de Lisboa. The original name, fashioned from three major Saint days in the calendar (St. Anthony, St. Peter and St, John), lasts all month of June and shows off the colorful culture of the area.

Parades are organized in all of the districts and traditional folk music, celebrations, and food are enjoyed throughout. The most important day is the twelfth of June when locals and tourists crowd Avenida da Liberdade to watch the parades and take in the carnival atmosphere. This day is also when traditionally, couples wed.

There is a party spirit in the air, tables are put in the streets, the cafes are full, there is the smell of grilled sardines in the air and music surrounds the city. Also, in the month of June, visitors will see lotsĀ of Fado dance performances in the streets, a lovely tradition all should see. All of this, along with the atmosphere, great weather and friendly locals, makes June the perfect time to visit the city.

Photo very nice but maybe the offensive slogan on the wall ‘top centre’ has gone unnoticed and does bring the tone down a little
