The Rijksmuseum Museum of Art and History in Amsterdam hosts a collection of the most recent paintings done by Dutch artists along with a collection which dates back to the 15th century. This government owned museum was founded in 1885 and is located in a neo-Gothic style building. The museum currently has a permanent collection of 5,000 paintings and 30,000 other masterpieces, as well as 17,000 historical objects.

Rijksmuseum is divided into 5 areas: paintings, sculptures, applied art, Asiatic art and Dutch history. The majority of the paintings are works done by artists such as Rembrandt, Vermeer and Frans Hals, which were done during the Dutch Golden Age. Rembrandt’s Nightwatch is the most famous piece of art on display.
