Ueno is one of the cultural centres of Tokyo with its impressive park, museums and temples. It is a great place for a family day out, as it is home to the oldest zoo in Japan, Ueno Park and lots of markets.

Another popular tourist attraction in Ueno is Kiyomizu Kanon-do, a temple which hosts a figure of the god Kanon who helps women with fertility problems.

Beside Ueno Park is Shinobazu Pond which is surrounded by water lilies and boasts a beautiful statue of Benten-do, the goddess of arts, knowledge and wisdom which is located on an island in the centre of the pond. There are more treasures within the park, such as the National Museum of Tokyo (Tokyo Kokuritsu Hakubutsukan) which is home to the largest collection of Japanese art in the world, not to mention the National Museum of Western Art, the Metropolitan Art Museum and the Museum of Natural Sciences.
Finally, and perhaps considered one of the most important attractions in Ueno, is Tōshō-gū sanctuary. It has a Chinese style gate with paintings by the famous artist Kano Tanyu and this sancutary was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
