Religious events are very important in Rome and Christmas is the most anticipated period of the year. One of the most important events celebrated by Catholics during the festive season is Midnight Mass which is held on the 24th December in the Vatican.

Visitors to Rome are usually shocked that many tourist attractions, shops and restaurants are closed during the Christmas period. However, despite this Rome is renowned as being a beautiful place to spend Christmas. There are Christmas markets in Navona Square and Campo de’ Fiori Square where you can buy typical cakes such as Panettone.

The nativity scenes in Roman Catholic Churches and in the Piazza di Spagna are not to be missed. The open-air concert on Christmas Eve in Piazza del Quirinale and the New Year’s Eve party in Piazza del Popolo are also popular events held during the festive season in Rome.
