12 miles west of Denpasar

This temple might look familiar to you as one of the icons of Bali and a photographer’s favourite. The name of the site means "land in the middle of the sea" and this is what will greet you as you walk past the main temple towards the rock pools and causeway. The seaside rock of the temple site is exposed to the power of the waves and has been repaired to stop the curvy-roofed temple buildings and their flowery trees from falling into the sea.

The entrance to this religious area has been built around the tourist. Consider the security of your possessions and be careful to barter for everything presented by the many stalls on the way down.
