The collective word for the orchestras of native instruments in Indonesia is Gamelan. These groups usually consist of drums, bamboo flutes, gongs, chimes and metallophones, which produce tribal and entrancing melodies. Performances of Gamelan music are often accompanied by choreographed dances or a Wayang puppet show. The sounds and patterns sound a bit alien to the Western ear as the tunings and scales come from tribal ancestral roots: before the arrival of Hinduism or Islam across these islands.

You can find rehearsals and shows at many open-sided communal pavilions, pendopo – something like a bandstand – or at weddings.
