The Taj Mahal is a huge mausoleum which was built in the city of Agra more than 300 years ago and was declared a World Heritage Site in 1983 by UNESCO. The Emperor Shah Jahan ordered for it to be built in honour of his second wife, Mumtaz Mahal who died while giving birth to her 14th child.

It is one of the most beautiful Mughal buildings ever built and is renowned for having a mixture of Muslim, Persian, Indian and Turkish architecture.

The Taj Mahal is built on a marble platform and the Iwam mausoleum, also built of white marble is crowned with a huge dome which is without doubt the most renowned feature of the complex. Another important building within grounds of the Taj Mahal is the red mosque which is used for gatherings by Agra’s Muslims.

The gardens surrounding the Taj Mahal are elaborately landscaped with canals, tree lined paths, flowers, fountains and a marble pond. It is believed that it was built as a representation of paradise on earth.
