Athens is located in the south of Europe and has a Mediterranean climate so the temperatures are normally mild throughout the year. However, snow is common in the winter. The best time of the year to visit Athens is during spring or autumn when the temperatures are pleasant. Summer temperatures can reach 40C and so this, along with the smog and pollution, can make sightseeing unbearable. Light rainfall is common mid-October and mid-April.
