Temple of Poseidon Cape Sounion Athina Temple of Poseidon is located in Cape Sounion which is around 43 miles from Athens city and is located on the southern coast of Attica. This ancient Greek temple was built for Poseidon who according to Greek mythology was the god of sea. Go and visit this temple if you have the opportunity during your stay in Athens. It was built around 440 BC and stands perched on a cliff overlooking the sea. Today, 15 of its original 34 columns are still standing and they are made of white marble.
