The Acropolis in Athens is considered to be the most important archaeological monument in Europe and it dates back to 450-330 BC. It was built upon the "Sacred Rock" and stands for all to see at 150m above sea level. This ancient Greek monument is the landmark of Athens and represents ancient Greek culture. Its collection of temples reveal the history of this civilisation and the religious centre of that time.

One of the most important features at this ancient site is the Parthenon which was built on the rock by Perikles between 447 and 432 BC. This building was used as a treasury, and to house a statue of Athena. The Erechtheion is another famous landmark within the Acropolis and it is renowned for its six pillars. While visiting the Acropolis, take the opportunity to visit the Acropolis Museum which is about 300m from the site and houses a collection of artefacts taken from the original landmark.
