Praia Ipanema,
Rio de Janeiro

Ipanema’s beach in Rio de Janeiro is one of the most famous in the city and is renowned for being chic and sophisticated. It is a great place for entertainment with football and volleyball courts which can be used if you can manage to get a team together, or you can always join in the fun with some people you meet.

Ipanema is also the place where Vinícius de Moraes and Antonio Carlos Jonim wrote the Bossa Nova song, La Garota de Ipanema which is currently the name of a popular restaurant in the area.

Along the mile stretch of white sand, there are lots of restaurants, exclusive shops, art galleries and kiosks, and the beach is divided into different areas: family areas, a gay section and an area for sport lovers.

Ipanema is also the district in Rio de Janeiro where you will find the historic centre of the city, with colonial and grand buildings near the 15 November Square. Watch out for the market which is held on Sundays – it is a good place to pick up a souvenir.
