One of the most important Fine Arts Museums in Brazil is located in Rio de Janeiro. The museum houses more than 16,000 works of art with a collection of sculptures and paintings which date from the 17th century to the 20th century and a design collection, engravings, African Art, furniture, Popular Art and a collection of medals.

The art gallery hosts mainly Brazilian art but it also displays a collection of international art, for example, Italian, French and Dutch paintings. The museum was founded in 1937 in the old Fine Arts School and it remains in this building today and regularly hosts temporary exhibitions.
