One of the main symbols of Brazil is Christ the Redeemer and since 2007, it has also been declared one of the Seven Wonders of the World. This monument represents Jesus Christ and measures 38m high and is the highest part of the Corcovado Mountain which is 710m above sea level. Christ the Redeemer can be seen from most districts in the city and is one of the things you must go and see if you are in Rio de Janeiro. The best way is probably by Corcovado Rack Railway which was opened in 1884. This method will take you on a journey through the Tijuca National Park to Corcovado station, just below the top of the mountain. The journey takes around 20 minutes and it will take you face to face with Christ the Redeemer which was opened in 1931 and is one of the most famous icons in Brazil. The statue weighs 1,145 tonnes and is covered with soapstone which makes it more resistant to the climate. It was built in France and construction began in 1921; however, it was not completed until five years later.
