Sydney has a temperate climate with hot summers and mild winters, and given its proximity to the sea, it does not experience dramatic climate changes throughout the year. The warmest month of the year is January with temperatures varying between 18.6C and 25.8C, although they can increase to 30C. The temperatures in winter do not usually fall any lower than 5C. The summer in Sydney usually starts in November and ends in February and the winter is normally between June and August.

Although the city does not suffer from cyclones and earthquakes, it is affected by the El NiƱo Southern Oscillation which significantly effects the climate in Sydney. Rain is common throughout the year but these patterns can change and produce serious droughts, storms, hail stones and flooding.
