Sydney Airport is located about 6 miles from the city centre and is the only airport in the country which offers connections to and from all the other continents. It receives around 20 million passengers each year thus making it the main gateway to Australia from abroad.

The quickest method of transport between the airport and the city is by the train service Airport Link which leaves the airport terminal every 10 minutes. There is also a bus service which passes by the Central Station, Circular Quay, Kings Cross and most of the hotels in the city centre.

Travelling within Australia is best done by air, but there are also regional and interstate trains which leave from Central Station and connect Sydney with most other cities in Australia. CountryLink offers a rail service with daily connections from Sydney to Brisbane and Melbourne.

You can also travel from Sydney to other cities and areas in Australia by coach from Sydney Coach Terminal.

Public Transport

Public transport in Sydney includes around 2,000 buses, trains and ferries and there are transport ticket which allow you to travel on all of these services. The combined passes with unlimited use are known as the Sydney Pass and are designed for tourists as it gives unlimited travel.

Sydney offers tourist transport such as the Sydney Explorer which will take you to 26 different tourist attractions or the Bondi Explorer which offers trips to Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs and beaches including the most famous in the city, Bondi Beach.

CityRail operates a regional train service which connects Sydney with other cities in New South Wales, such as Newcastle, Wollongong and the Blue Mountains.

Metro Transport operates the Monorail and Metro Light Rail services within Sydney city centre. The Monorail service connects the Central Station with Darling Harbour, Star City Casino and the western suburbs and it was opened in 1988. The Metro Light Rail service was inaugurated in 1997 and it operates from the city centre to the inner west.

Bus is another method of moving within the city centre. There are two main bus stations in Sydney; Wynyard and Circular Quay which connect the north and the east of the city. NightRide is the name of the night bus service in the city and it is the best way of getting home in the dark.
