Plaza de Mayo, Montserrat, Buenos Aires

Plaza de Mayo is located in Montserrat and this square is considered the centre of political life in Buenos Aires. Plaza Mayor was the original name of the square; however, its name was changed to Plaza de Mayo (May Square) as it was where the May Revolution took place in 1810.

Talking a walk through the square will take you to the very heart of Buenos Aires, painting its history and traditions, and one of the most significant features in the middle of Plazo de Mayo is the PirĂ¡mide de Mayo which commemorates the first anniversary of independence in Buenos Aires.

If you visit Plaza de Mayo you should visit some of the main historical monuments which are located near it, such as the Buenos Aires Cabildo, the Metropolitan Cathedral from the colonial period, the National Bank and the Casa Rosada which was built at the end of the 19th century. The square is also famous for having hosted many demonstrations and it is surrounded by some important streets such as the Avenida de Mayo and the Avenida 9 de Julio.
