The first cemetery to be built in Buenos Aires was in Recoleta in 1822 and it was originally used as a garden by monks. Today, it is a major tourist attraction, not only because of its architecture but also because of the people who are buried in the cemetery Many famous politicians as well as some famous people such as Eva Perón (Evita), José Hernández and Saavedra Lamas are buried in the Cemenerio de la Recoleta.

It covers 15 acres and has many churches, old buildings and the Pilar Church which was built in 1732. The cemetery is renowned for its mausoleums and vaults of which 90 have been declared National Historical Monuments.
