Over time this compact area of twisting terracotta-roofed streets has played host to many invading forces. Today, it is the heart of the city with plenty of shops, restaurants, sheesha bars and hotels. Much renovation work has taken place here, winning the area a Golden Apple Prize, a restoration award equivalent to Olympic gold. This is the perfect place to snap some great holiday pictures. Sun baked city walls, ancient towers, windows bursting with flowers and a historic marina bobbing with fishing boats greet you as you navigate the bustle.
For a choice of architecture, Kaleiçi is hard to beat. This small area contains churches, basilicas, temples and Hadrian's gate - built in 139 AD to commemorate the emperor's visit to the city. All of the original buildings have been maintained to benefit the visitor.
