Dublin Castle

Palace Street, off Dame Street
Dublin 2

Dublin Castle was built between 1208 and 1220 and was used as the headquarters by the British government of Ireland until it gained independence in 1922. The current building dates back to 18th century because it was rebuilt after having been destroyed by a fire.

Today, elections and official state events are held at Dublin Castle. There are also guided visits of the building showing the State Apartments which are used as the residential and public quarters of the Viceregal Court, the Chapel Royal and the Viking defence bank in the Undercroft.

Dublin Castle houses the Garda Police Museum which is where you will see the Throne Room and the Normandy Tower (1226). The Dubhlinn Gardens are also worth a visit and have been located behind the castle since 1680.

Malahide Castle and Gardens, Malahide
County Dublin

Malahide Castle is situated in Malahide, a beautiful town which is about 6 miles from Dublin city centre. The castle was owned by the Talbot family for 791 years and today it is open to the public and has a large collection of old furniture on display. There is also a collection of portraits which can be viewed during the guided tour of the castle. Private banquets are sometimes held in the main dining room of the castle.

Near the castle is Tara's Palace which is one of the most impressive dolls' houses in the world. Fry Model Railway is also situated nearby in the castle's gardens and is a collection of miniature handmade Irish trains.

Lauriston Castle was built outside Edinburgh during the 16th century as a tower house which was very common to build in Scotland during this period. The tower was extended and reformed as a castle during the 19th century and it was used as a residence for many famous Scots.

Today, Lauriston is owned by the Edinburgh City Hall who decided to open it to the public. It is located in the countryside and has a 30 acre park, a rose garden and a Japanese garden.
