The Kabuki-za Theatre opened its doors in Tokyo in 1889 and it has become one of the most popular theatres in Japan attracting people from all over the world who come to see the bright costumes, elaborate make-up and wonderful music which add to the beauty of Kabuki performances.

Kabuki started in the 17th century and they have not changed since then. There are still no actresses as women were banned from performing in the productions in 1645 and today it is men who carry out the their roles.

There are two types of representations in this theatre, Kabuki, (jidai-mono) which are usually historical dramas and sewa-mono which are usually domestic dramas.

A complete play can last hours and you can usually assist one act or a selection of acts.

The National Theatre is open for visitors who wish to take a guided tour of the building and for people attending performances. You will be able to visit the whole theatre including the backstage areas.

There are three different auditoriums which are each used for different performances. The Oliver Theatre is designed as an amphitheatre; Lyttelton Theatre is a traditional theatre and Cottesloe Theatre is a box-like stage.

Black Light Theatres are very common in Prague and the most famous theatre in the city is the Image Theatre which was opened in 1989 and hosts black light dances and pantomimes.

These theatres are very popular in the city as they use certain props and materials, such as black curtains, a dark stage, UV light and fluorescent costumes to create visual illusions.

Performances are held at 8 p.m. daily at the Image Theatre in Prague and tickets cost 480 CZK.

The oldest and one of the most famous streets in New York is Broadway which is a wide avenue stretching from the north of the city to south.

This avenue has 39 theatres which makes it the most important area for the American theatre industry. There are even theatres located in the streets which branch off Broadstreet, and this is where you can see comedians, musicals, dances and operas. Broadway is the place to go if you want to see the best performances in New York as this is where some of the most renowned actors and musicians, such as Antonio Bandera, Grace Kelly, Katharine Hepburn, Barbara Streisand and James Dean, have taken to the stage.

The Open Air Theatre in London was founded in 1932 and is the oldest open-air theatre which is run by professional actors in the world. Over 120,000 people visit this theatre each year, and it is famous for its Shakespeare performances, in particular Midsummer Night's Dream, which are held at the theatre.

Musicals and children's performances are also hosted at the Open Air Theatre. It has a 1,240-seat auditorium and picnic area.

Royal Opera House

The Royal Opera House, located in Covent Garden, was initially opened in 1728, however, it was rebuilt in 1996 and transformed into the present Royal Opera House which can be visited today. The theatre has two separate stages; Linbury Studio, which is used for opera performances and Clore Studio which is used by the Royal Ballet.

The Royal Opera House in London is open daily and guided tours of the building are available. You will be able to see everything in the guided tour, from the different stages to the amphitheatre, the Royal Ballet studios, the conservatory and the Paul Hamlyn Hall.

Shakespeare's Globe Theatre was founded by American actor and director, Sam Wanamaker, and shows Shakespeare performances. The theatre was opened in 1997 and is an accurate reproduction of the 1599 open-air playhouse where Shakespeare directed most of his plays.

The Globe is divided into three different areas: the first is the theatre itself, the second is Globe Education, which is a forum for young people, and the third is Shakespeare's Globe Exhibition. The shows that take place at the Globe today are very similar to those performed over four hundred years ago.
