Banqueting House

Whitehall
London

The Banqueting House is the only part that survived the devastating fire in Whitehall Palace which was built during the 14th century and was home to the Archbishop of York. It was designed by Inigo Jones in 1619 and was finished in 1622 and it looks like a cathedral. Its architectonic style is known as Italianate Renaissance and it was the first building in England where crown glass was used in the windows.

The ceiling in the Banqueting House was painted by Peter Paul Rubens and commissioned by King Charles I in 1636. After Charles death, the Banqueting House served as a Royal Chapel and a museum for the Royal United Service Institution. Today, it often hosts lunchtime concerts.

Teatro del Liceu

La Rambla, 51-59
Barcelona
website

The most prestigious opera house in Barcelona, the Gran Teatre del Liceu, has been open for 150 years and is more commonly known as El Liceu. Initially, the theatre was designed to be used as a school of music.

Two fires completely destroyed the opera house, the most recent taking place in 1994. The most recent reconstruction of the Liceu, following the fire of 1994, has converted it into one of the most modern opera houses in the world, while at the same time maintaining its original architecture.

Carrer Germans Desvalls and Passeig dels Castanyers
Barcelona

Designed at the end of the 18th century using the neoclassical style of that period is the Parc del Laberint d'Horta which is the oldest garden in Barcelona and is situated in the north of the city. There are various levels to the garden and it is lined with flowerbeds, trees and there is also a canal. The most impressive part of the garden is the lower lever where you can find a maze made from around 750 metres of trimmed cypresses.

Compare airfares and find cheap flights to Barcelona with eDreams.

There are also a number of ’must-sees' in the 22 acre garden, such as the small sculptures and fountains. In the past, Carlos IV, Fernando VII and Alfonso XIII used the garden for royal receptions and it has also been the venue for theatrical performances and the setting for films such as El Perfume.
