The annual Republic Day Parade is on 26th January and is celebrated all over India, with the most important parade taking place in Delhi. It is a military and cultural march which celebrates the implementation of the Indian Constitution in 1950 and celebrations begin by hoisting the national flag, and this is followed by military parade which starts on Raisina Hill in New Delhi and ends at Red Fort.

The military parade includes representatives from the three divisions of the Armed Forces and it is followed by a cultural parade with music and songs from different regions in India, which shows the cultural richness and diversity in the country.

Diwali or the Light Festival is one of the most popular events in India which is held every year between October and November and celebrates the victory of good over bad, and light over darkness. Christmas and New Year in Prague 2009

Christmas is one of the nicest times of the year to visit Prague. Markets where you can buy typical Christmas food, crafts and sweets are set up in Old Town Square and this is also where the city Christmas tree stands dominating the area.

Religious events are very important in Rome and Christmas is the most anticipated period of the year. One of the most important events celebrated by Catholics during the festive season is Midnight Mass which is held on the 24th December in the Vatican.

Visitors to Rome are usually shocked that many tourist attractions, shops and restaurants are closed during the Christmas period. However, despite this Rome is renowned as being a beautiful place to spend Christmas. There are Christmas markets in Navona Square and Campo de' Fiori Square where you can buy typical cakes such as Panettone.

The nativity scenes in Roman Catholic Churches and in the Piazza di Spagna are not to be missed. The open-air concert on Christmas Eve in Piazza del Quirinale and the New Year's Eve party in Piazza del Popolo are also popular events held during the festive season in Rome.

Madrid is transformed during the festive season into a rainbow of Christmas lights, a mass of carols singers, nativity scenes and theatrical performances. Some of the most famous nativity scenes are the Belén Napolitano which was made in the 18th century. Other traditional events are the Christmas market and outdoor ice rinks.

Christmas Eve is celebrated with a fireworks display at Plaza Cibeles and New Year's Eve is celebrated at Plaza de la Puerta del Sol where crowds of people gather to see in the new year. Together they carry out the tradition of swallowing one grape on each strike of the famous clock in Puerta del Sol. This is supposed to bring good luck for the new year. A race called "Carrera San Silvestre Vallecana" is held in the city on New Year's Eve and is a good way to run off all the food eaten over the festive period. Another popular event is the "Cabalgata de Reyes" which takes place on January the 5th, when the three kings, who once celebrated the birth of Jesus Christ, bring presents to the children and parade through the streets of many cities and towns in Spain.

Virgen de la Paloma

To celebrate the annual "Verbena de la Paloma" festival which takes place on the 15th August, the inhabitants of Madrid, madrileños, wear traditional clothes. Men dress in traditional costumes called "chulapos" and women wear the popular "Mantón de Manila." The streets are decorated with coloured lamps and people dance a traditional dance called "chotis." The open-air dances take place mainly in La Latina, Lavapiés and Vistillas quarters.
