New York Marathon

The New York Marathon is one of the most important races in the world and has around 90,000 participants each year. The main attraction of the marathon is not only the $700,000 prize, but also the chance to win in front of around two million spectators.

The very first marathon was held in 1970 and only 127 participants took part in the race which consisted of four laps of Central Park. The marathon course was changed in 1976 and from that point participants had to cross the five bridges and the finish line was in Central Park.

This marathon has been used as a symbol for others all over the world.

The National Gallery of Scotland has a permanent collection of paintings and sculptures which date back to the Renaissance period. The majority of the works in this gallery are European and it famous for hosting the largest collection of Scottish art in the world. The gallery is open daily and there is no entrance fee.

The National Gallery is made up of a number of independent galleries which house 17th and 20th century artwork. The Scottish National Portrait Gallery displays portraits of people who have played an influential role in Scotland's history. Finally, the National Gallery of Modern Art and the Dean Gallery host modern art, dada and surrealist collections.

The Royal Scottish Academy is another gallery which shows temporary exhibitions and Paxton House, Duff House and Granton Centre for Art host other exhibitions.

Bushy Park

Bushy Park is the second largest Royal Park in London as it covers 1099 acres and is located in the north of Hampton Court Palace. This park is home to 320 free-roaming deer. The popular mile-long Chestnut Avenue was designed by Sir Christopher Wren as the formal approach to Hampton Court and it is bordered by horse chestnuts and lime trees.

There are designated routes in the park for cyclists and horses and you can also enjoy a walk in the woodlands and or discover the artificial river.

Tower Bridge has been the connection from one side of the River Thames to the other since 1894 when it inaugurated to the public. Building of the bridge began in 1876 and it was designed as a result of increased commercial development in the East End of London.

It was the largest bascule bridge in the world when it was completed, towering 154 feet above the River Thames and today, it is a major crossing point in London and is used by over 40,000 motorists and pedestrians each day.

The Seven Bridges Jazz Festival is celebrated in September in Amsterdam and is held on one of the most famous bridges in Amsterdam, the Reguliersgracht Bridge, as it is the only point where you can see the famous seven bridges.

De Dam is a square which was built in the 13th century in the historic centre of Amsterdam. A 22m high marble statue known as The Dam is a national monument located in the centre of Dam Square and it was built in memory of the soldiers killed during the Second World War.

In the 1960s, the square was renowned worldwide for the Dam Square hippies and today it is a meeting point for both tourists and locals.

The square has many restaurants, bars and famous attractions such as the Amsterdam Diamond Center. The famous waxwork museum, Madame Tussauds and the Nieuwe kerk are also popular attractions located in the square.

Parc Güell

Located in the Gràcia district is Parc Güell which was designed by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí and was built between 1900 and 1914. It was initially planned as a housing development for the rich, however, the project was a commercial failure and so abandoned and the park fell into the hands of the government. It was converted into a municipal garden which today is home to one of the longest benches in the world, as well as one of the main icons of Barcelona, Gaudí's multicoloured mosaic dragon which welcomes visitors at the entrance of the park.

Park Güell is another modernist emblem of the city. It is surrounded by a wall and there are two small houses located at the entrance which were the former houses of the caretakers of the park. A staircase divided by the famous dragon leads to a chamber with 86 stone columns. These columns support the Plaça Gran del parque situated above the chamber. This area is without doubt the focal point of the park as it offers spectacular views of the city, as well as being home to the famous bench that snakes the whole way round the outside of the gallery.

Some of the most important features in the park are the bird's nests which form part of the terrace walls, not to mention Gaudí's house which is made of multicoloured mosaics. Entrance to the park is free.

Beaches in Barcelona

Barcelona is an excellent place to go if you want a city break as well as a place to enjoy the sun. For this reason the number of visitors increases considerably during the summer months as it is a city which not only offers lots of sights to see and the chance to shop, but also long sandy beaches. There are six main beaches in Barcelona: Sant Sebastià, Barceloneta, Nova Icaria, Bogatell, Mar Bella and Nova Mar Bella.

Mar Bella and Sant Sebastià beaches both have nudist areas and all the beaches in Barcelona have a Red Cross team ready on hand which is reassuring if you are travelling with young children. There are also toilet facilities, bars, restaurants and kiosks where you can get a refreshing drink during the day or enjoy a romantic meal with a sea view by night. However, if you prefer to escape the city, you can visit some of the other beaches along the coast, such as Sitges or the Costa Brava.

The beaches in the city are cleaned three times a day during the summer months and there are lifeguards and water fountains which will keep you hydrated during the heat of the summer days. Lots of people also enjoy doing sport on the beaches, such as volleyball or perhaps surfing on the windier days.

The collection in this museum includes paintings, pictures, porcelain, weaponry, coins and models. Entrance to the Museo Municipal de Madrid is free.
