The Statue of Liberty was a present to the USA from France to mark the 100th year of American Independence in 1886 and to thank the USA for their help during the Franco-Prussian War. It is located on Liberty Island in the River Hudson.

The monument is a women and it measures 46m high and weighs 225 tonnes. It was built in Paris and then taken apart and sent to America by boat. In 1984, the Statue of Liberty was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and today it is the most famous monument in the USA.

You will have to take the ferry to get to Liberty Island and entrance to the Statue of Liberty is free; however, there is no access to the crown or torch.

Dalmeny House was built in 1817 and has a private collection of 18th century French furniture. This house is open both for guided visits and private celebrations, conferences and corporate events.

The library, the drawing room, the collection of porcelains and the dining room are some of the most important rooms and collections in the house. Some of the most interesting objects are a dice game made in Paris in 1737, an oriental Gong which has become a great antique and a porcelain flower collection.

Dalmeny House has 98 acres of land surrounding the estate where you can go for a relaxing walk and there is even a golf course.

The Mouth of Truth is located on the portico of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin Church in Rome. It measures 1.75 metres in diameter and is the face of a man made from marble. In the Middle Ages there was a famous legend which claimed that the stone had powers. It was believed that the Mouth of Truth was a lie detector, and so if someone lied while their hand was in its mouth, the stone would bite off their hand.

Shopping in Barcelona

The best shopping area in Barcelona extends from the bottom of the Rambla, to Plaça Catalunya, Passeig de Gràcia and ends in Avinguda Diagonal. Passeig de Gràcia is where you will find well-known designer shops such as Versace, Burberry and Armani, as well as the renowned Spanish designer, Custo.

Located in the very centre of Barcelona is the famous Plaça Catalunya where you can visit the Corte Inglés, a department store selling just about anything you can imagine with a restaurant on the top floor which offers fantastic views over the whole city. The street branching off this square is Portal de l'Àngel, where you can shop for clothes and accessories in some of the most typical Spanish high street stores, such as Zara, Mango, Oysho and Bershka.

One places you must visit is the Mercat de la Boqueria which is situated in the middle of the Rambla and is renowned as the most colourful market in Barcelona. At this market you can buy fruit, sweets and fresh food.

Barrio del Born is a district which is well-known for its art galleries, designer clothes and second-hand shops. There are also a number of shopping malls throughout the city, such as Maremagnum, Gran Via 2 and La Maquinista.

Santiago Bernabéu Stadium

The main football stadium in Madrid is Santiago Bernabéu which was built in 1944 and is home to the Real Madrid football club. It is named after the club’s founder and the stadium itself has been expanded on several occasions. Today, Santiago Bernabéu can host 80,000 spectators and it is planned to have a retractable roof added to the stadium in the near future. The main entrance is located in Paseo de la Castellana and the stadium even has its own underground station. There are guided tours of the building which include a visit to the trophy room, the presidential balcony and the players’ dressing rooms, not to mention the best part of the tour which involves walking through the players’ tunnel and onto the football pitch.

Other football teams that have their own stadiums in Madrid are Atlético de Madrid and Rayo Vallecano.
