Chinatown

Chinatown,
Bangkok

Chinatown in Bangkok is one of the only districts in Bangkok which has escaped modern development and the rise of the skyscrapers. The area is mainly inhabited by Chinese which have been living there for generations and so consider themselves as Thais rather than Chinese.

Chinatown is not one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city and very little English is spoken in the area. However, there are a number of things you must see while in Chinatown, such as Wat Traimit, home to the largest golden Buddha in the world, and Wat Mangko Kamalawt and Li Thi Miew Temple.

The most famous street in Chinatown is Yaowarat Road which is lined with gold shops and street markets selling Thai souvenirs. The most famous gold shop in the area, Tant To Gung is in Chinatown, so don't leave the area without having a look.

Kensington Market,
Toronto.

Kensington Market was founded at the start of the 20th century and is a multicultural and dynamic district which gets its name from the open-air markets which lines the streets. It is one of the oldest districts in the city with narrow, busy streets which are packed with shops and restaurants.

It was mainly Jews who lived in Kensington Market when it was first founded. However, immigrants from the Caribbean, East Asia and the rest of the world began to move into the area as the years went by.

New Delhi

Janpath is a road which connects Connaught Place with the Lodhi Gardens and this is where the most famous market in Delhi, Janpath Market, is located. There are hundreds of shops on both sides of the street selling typical Indian products and if you want to get a good deal at the market you have to know how to bargain. Tibetan Market is also located along this street and if you are looking for jewellery then you should head to this market.

Another famous underground market in Connaught Place is Palika bazaar and it sells all sorts of electronic equipment and clothes at unbeatable prices.
Shopping in Prague

The main shopping area in Prague is around Wenceslas Square. Small shops and boutiques are located near Old Town Square and in Malà Strana, or alternatively if you are looking for designer clothes you should go to Pariszka Street. Souvenir shops can be found in Na Příkopech.

The most popular souvenirs which you can buy in Prague are Czech crystal and puppets. The tradition of crystal goes back to 1200 when it was formed in the monasteries in the North of the Bohemian region. Art Décoratif on Melantrichora street is a beautiful souvenir shop where you can buy typical glassware, jewellery and fabrics to take home as a souvenir.

If you are looking for fresh fruit and vegetables, sweets and honey you should go to Havelská Market in Staré Město. Or if you want to shop til you drop, Slovanský Dům is the place to go as it is the main shopping mall in Prague and it also has cinemas and restaurants.

Smithfield Market

Charterhouse Street
London

Smithfield Market is the largest market in London and probably the oldest as it has been selling meat and livestock for over 800 years. It was originally called Smooth Field and was located outside the city walls. The market place was also used for public executions, perhaps the most famous of which was the execution of William Wallace in 1305.

Meat and poultry in the UK are usually priced according to Smithfield Market prices and almost 120,000 tonnes of produce are sold in the market each year. The market has been refurbished and is now regarded as one of the most modern markets in the world which is housed in a Victorian building.

Covent Garden market is held at Covent Garden Piazza and has offered antiques, clothing, crafts and food from over 40 stalls for around 300 years. The square was originally designed as a residential area, but today is one of the main entertainment areas in London.

Shops, street performers, pubs, bars, cinemas, theatres and over 1,000 places to eat are found in Covent Garden. There are affordable and expensive restaurants which serve Mediterranean, Chinese or traditional British dishes. Covent Garden has its own underground station and is believed to be the oldest inhabited area in London.

There are other attractions worth visiting near Covent Garden Square, such as the Jubilee Hall, St. Paul's Church, Royal Opera House and London's Transport Museum. The Theatre Museum, National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery are among the main attractions in the area.
