Gamla Stan

Stadsholmen
Stockholm

Gamla Stan was formed during the 13th century and is the old town and historic centre of Stockholm. Many events which mark Stockholm's history have taken place in this area such as revolts and executions.

It is located on three islands; Stadsholmen, Riddarholmen and Helgeandsholmen, and is the area where you will find a number of important buildings such as Dramaten and the Royal Opera.

Gamla Stan is one of the busiest areas in the city because there are lots of restaurants and bars, as well as shops, bookshops and antique dealers. A lot of the buildings in the area date back to the 17th and 18th century and it has a medieval charm which attracts tourists.

If you have to choose one area to visit during your stay it should be Gamla Stan as this is where you will find the majority of the tourist attractions in the city, such as the museums, the Royal Palace and famous churches.
