On 2nd May every year, Madrid commemorates the 19th century historic uprising of the inhabitants of the city against the French. Night festivals, street dances and celebrations take place over a number of days in Plaza Dos de Mayo or 2nd May Square in the Malasaña quarter in Madrid. The uprising triggered the War of Independence between Spain and France which lasted 6 years.
