Barcelona, Spain - City Guide

Barcelona, formerly known as Ciudad Condal, is the capital of the autonomous region, Catalonia and is situated in the north-east of the Iberian Peninsula. It was founded by the Romans, although many other civilisations, Iberians, Carthaginians, Visigoths and Muslims, have lived in the city throughout its history and many artefacts and ruins are the evidence of this and can be seen in museums around the city.

Each year Barcelona welcomes thousands of visitors who come to see the famous modernist architecture designed by the well-known Catalan architect, Antoni Gaudí. Others come to sunbath on the city beaches or relax while sipping a cold drink at one of the many open-air bars along the Rambla. Barcelona has always been of great economic importance and today it is one of the top tourist destinations in Europe.
