San Juan Bonfire Night

San Juan beach,
East Alicante

Every June 24th beaches along the coast of Alicante light up the night sky with bonfires, fireworks and festivities. This originally Pagan festival celebrates the middle of the year before the harder times to come. On this night, we are told that the Pagan gods appear in the smoke filled air!

It is also a time for cleansing with rituals dedicated to freeing oneself from sins and moving on. By jumping over a bonfire 3 times or washing in the sea at midnight you will make yourself pure again.

The bonfires are built by everybody over the previous days and include effigies of famous people, film characters and one of the original sinners - Judas Iscariot. Expect music, concerts, entertainment and lots of people. Remember to bring some warm clothes and some food to keep you going.

Alicante comes alive on San Juan Bonfire Night. A great event which gets you ready for summer. Getting to the beach to watch the fireworks can be difficult so go early!
