Airport

The easiest and fastest way to get to Amsterdam is by airplane. Schiphol Airport is about 6 miles south-west of Amsterdam and it operates both national and international flights. It offers routes to more than 230 worldwide destinations.

There are many ways to travel from the airport to the city using public transport. The train runs a regular service between the airport and the city centre and the Hotel Shuttle is a bus service which runs between the airport and the main hotels in Amsterdam. You also have the option of taking a taxi.

Another way of travelling to Amsterdam is by train. The city has nine train stations, the most common and central being Centraal Station. Intercity trains and the regional trains connect Amsterdam’s central train station with other Dutch cities.

It is easy to get to Amsterdam by car as it is accessed by the A10 motorway, however, it is not recommended to travel by car in the city because parking is usually very expensive.

Public Transport

The Dutch Public Transport Company provides a wide range of transport to choose from, for example, buses, trams, metro and boats which travel the canals.

The metro (snell tram) has four lines which connect the city with the outskirts and you should remember to validate your Stippenkaart ticket before travelling. You can buy tickets in supermarkets, tobacconists and ticket offices at the metro station. Please see the Amsterdam Metro Plan for more information.

The most popular transport system in Amsterdam is the tramway which has many more lines than the metro and covers the whole city including the outskirts.

The buses connect the centre with the outskirts of the city as well as towns near Amsterdam. There is a regular night bus service known as nachtbussen, however, it is more expensive.

The most popular method of travelling in Amsterdam is by bicycle. This is by far the best way to travel within the city as there are various cycle paths and they are all well sign posted. There are around 5,800 miles of cycle paths in the Netherlands, not to mention lots of places where you can hire a bicycle or cycle rickshaw.

You can also visit Amsterdam by boat which will take you on a trip down the many canals which divide the city.
