Red Fort

Chandni Chowk
New Delhi

Red Fort in Delhi, also known as Lal qila, is a red sandstone fortress which took 10 years to build and was finished in 1648.

The wall of the fort measures over a mile long and the height varies between 16m and 33 m. The moat is 10m deep and is crossed by stone bridges which were built in 1811. The main entrance to the fortress is through Lahore Gate which leads to the Meena Bazaar where you can buy antiques, paintings and jewellery.

This huge stone building behind the walls of the fort is a replica of how paradise is described in the Koran and it has typical Mughal architecture and was built at the request of Emperor Shah Jahan.
