National Museum

The National Museum of Rio Janeiro was founded in 1818 and is located in São Cristóvão Palace which was the former residence of the Royal Family. It is surrounded by the luxurious Quinta de Boa Vista gardens which is home to Rio de Janeiro zoo.

Some of the most famous galleries in the museum are the Palaeontology Gallery which has an exhibition of huge mammals and dinosaurs and the Ethnology and Archaeology Galleries.

This museum is the oldest scientific institution in Brazil and it has links with the Ministry of Education and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. There is a total of around 3,000 displays at the museum and apart from the permanent collection, it is also worth visiting the impressive Botanic Garden and the biggest scientific library in the city, the Central Library.
